Excitement of EVEs

When?
When did it disappear to me???

As I was a kid, I had excitement of having Eves, like Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve, more than the actual days.
On Christmas Eve, I loved reading a Christmas picture book.
On New Year's Eve, music lovers my younger brother and I, used to watching Red and White Song Battle (Kohaku Uta Gassen,) and Southern All Stars count down live.

Whenever I had the Eves, I had certain feelings. They were excitement of having special events, and nostalgia for the time had passed so quickly.

However, today, I spent time like one of my regular days!
Of course I'm in my parent-in-law's house, which is not my "regular," and I helped my mom-in-law to prepare the New Year's dishes...
But I also could study, and didn't watch the Year-end special TV programs so much.

Is it a good thing or bad?
Maybe not so good...because I just became desperate to look back my LAZY 2009, so I tried to study!!

See you in 2010!!!

Biggest News in 2009

My personal biggest news in 2009 is, actually...the fact that having nothing biggest.

My resolutions were passing the first grade of EIKEN, taking the perfect score of TOEIC, and passing the fourth grade of French certificate.
2009 should have been an intensive year for me, but as I look back this year, it has been even sluggish.
I just achieved one resolution out of three!!!

I could excuse. I had to go to hospital often this year, and unfortunately I got an adverse effect. It took a lot of time...but I can't deny this..."my motivation got lower than it used to be."
Why?maybe because I settled down in my mother country, Japan, got a stable job & our own condo, my hubby has been promoted, and our relationship has been firm & comfortable...

In other words, "I'm too happy to be hungry to make my dreams come true!!"
However, I shouldn't be so. Being happy & making an effort to get higher place can be compatible.

I really want to aim to become "ideal myself" everyday!
I would like to make this blog "the bridge" between "real me" and "dream me," which was my original intention of this blog, "dreamboat!"

Have a nice New Year Eve!!

English Learning Stylist

Last night, my hubby and I left home at 9:30 pm, drove on (actually, he ONLY drove) Tomei Highway, and got my parent-in-law's house at 2:30am.
Why did we go out so late? To avoid the traffic jam!
The congestion of Japanese major highways on busy seasons is terrible!
Fortunately, we had never been stopped by the congestion.

We are having a good time with my parent-in-law!
Also, this small town in Mie prefecture has become busier lately.
Exploring the town is interesting!

By the way, what inspired me today most was just a "page" on a magazine.
When I browsed "AERA English(English educational magazine for adults)" at a local bookstore, I found a new job title, from the introduction of a lady.
"English Learning Stylist!"
She (I forgot her name) was a beautiful lady who looked in her 30's.
She had been an English teacher at an English conversation school (like me,) and now her job is...what the title says.
She has kept her English journal for 19 years!!since she studied in America.
She wrote a book, "I recommend you to keep journal in English," and the book became a smash hit! The article said so.

Wow! I've kept my journal in English! But just for...three years?and "sometimes" I keep, "sometimes" I don't write.
In contrast to, she has never stopped writing English journal!!

I learned from her that if we continue something, we can get something worth to be a professional. Do I have a possibility to be "English learning stylist!??"
Before I dream of that, I should have my private students make their dreams come true, like getting a high score of TOEIC or passing EIKEN.
That's very hard thing for me!!!

News Resource

I said I started to subscribe "The Japan Times Weekly," but just after I applied for that, I found another English weekly newspaper.
"The Nikkei Weekly!"
I've read Nikkei for years, but I didn't notice the ad!
I applied to get the sample issue, and two papers were delivered yesterday.

Both papers look good! Which one should I continue to read? Can I keep reading two papers every week?
That's the question...

I also watched a video, "CNN Hero Award" today.
This awards are presented to many people, who helped physically challenged or people in poor areas. The presenters are gorgeous celebrities. Nicole Kidman, Eva Mendes, etc... The celebrities have also been involved in volunteer activities.
I really hope this award program will start in Japan, as well! We should!

I would like to, and I feel "we should" know what is happening in the world, how people help each other beyond the cultural differences, and keep myself "moved" by inspiring people.
To do so, which resource should I use? I'll do try searching the best one, next year.

Housecleaning!

Two major things to do at the end of year (in Japan) are...you know, writing new year cards and the general housecleaning!

I almost finished the new year cards stuff, so I cleaned my house today.
I washed the windows, cleaned the kitchen including ventilating fans and refrigerator, with...nobody.
My hubby had a bad hangover, so he slept all afternoon!

Yesterday, he sent a text message to me in the afternoon. It was written "I'm going to the end-year party tonight, so you don't need to prepare my dinner!"
Then...he didn't come back until 3:00am!

I knew he was a "decent" "grown-up," but I was worried about him.
He rarely goes our for a drink, and seldom came home so late without any mail or phone call.
If he was having fun, it's all right...
But, what if he was abducted by a mysterious syndicate, was tied with a chair, and tortured!?!? (You know, that exactly "almost never happens," though...)
I know I had watched American TV dramas too much, like "Heroes" or "Chuck," that's why I could imagine such criminal scenes! But why didn't he call me???

The reason was very simple, he had just been busy with many co-workers.
He came home past 3:00 am, not having been tortured. Just having fun!

He said "I'm sorry!" again and again, not only he didn't call me last night, but also he couldn't help me with housecleaning today.

But it's OK! Last night, I read an article about the U.S. president Obama, and went to bed, being worried about my hubby.
Maybe that's why? In my dream, my husband WAS the President Obama, and he apologized to me! He said, "I'm DEEPLY regretful that I didn't call you last night..." looking into my eyes.

One of the most powerful men in the world apologized to me on the behalf of my REAL husband!! Therefore, I completely forgave him.
Thanks to sir, President!

Table for Two

Merry Christmas, again!

I was "knocked down" by flu on the last Christmas, so I'm HAPPY to be able to celebrate Christmas even though I've "kept" rash over my body!!

Because I worked until 9:30 pm last night, and my hubby is having the year-end party tonight, we had a home-made Chritstmas party on 23, alone.
I cooked all dishes & put my favorite clothes on (the venue was our house, though...)

My favorite dish was...the left one! Doom-shaped Sushi! I cut out peppers, cucumbers, hams, and cheese into the shape of flower. Then I placed them into a rice bowl, and put sushi rice into it. After I flipped it over on the dish...here is the "flower-doom" sushi!!

I think we had a "recession version's home party." I used cheap ingredients to cook. And cake, as well! The Christmas cake was, actually from our condo's real estate agent. We got it by sweepstakes! This cake was very interesting. In the box, there were many small roll cakes, a ribbon, and Christmas ornaments.
Yes! The cake is for self-decoration!
I used whipped cream, raspberry, blueberry, and added more edible ornaments.

The finish was... here it is!! I attached the "front" photo and the "back" photo.
(I'm sorry! I couldn't change the angle of these photos... I'll change them later!!) What do you think? This is apparently, "the recession version's Christmas cake!"
It's almost free for us!!

We enjoyed the Christmas dinner. Although it was "table for two" as well as usual...

Wait a minute! The cake is really "for two!??"
In our condo, many families have kids. Therefore, the cake (the prize of condo's sweepstakes) was the "family" size. As you notice, we've still been eating the cake...

Christmas Gifts

Merry Christmas!
Today, we didn't have regular classes at my school, so I had just three private lessons.

Reiko; 50, a Japanese calligraphy teacher. She has a college student daughter and a high school student son, but she looks an ACTRESS!! Her fashion is always perfect, her nails are gorgeous... AND she has a good sense of humor. I love her!

Chiharu: 10, an elementary school student. She loves Tokyo Disney Land, and always buys the souvenirs to me.

Kotaro:17, a high school student. Her mother is very eager to have her sons study English. Actually, the whole family members are our students!
He just came back from school trip to...Hawaii! Do you envy him!? I do!!!

Since they always give me something(like souvenirs,) I bought them Christmas cookies shaped Santa!! Aren't they cute?
I also give these to my colleagues. Especially, I wanted to express my thanks to Bill and Tricia, new American teachers! As they had kid Christmas lessons today, Bill disguised him as a Santa, and Tricia became a reindeer! They were such good sports to make our school atmosphere on Christmas Eve, enjoyable!!

...And, I bought a Christmas gift to myself, as well...
Can you guess what the shoe-shaped one with lots of spangles? A pen case!! I felt, I would study harder if I got such a beautiful pen case!!

...I always make an excuse when I buy something...

French Certification

Yes!
I got it!
I passed the French Certification! The diploma was delivered today!
Even I say, "passed," it was 4th grade. The second easiest one of the certification.
When I took the 5th(the easiest) grade in Spring, my score was almost a full score!
However, the test of 4th grade was difficult for me, who had never learned "past tense," " half-past tense(characteristic French grammar!,)" and "future tense."

According to the letter from the French Certification Administration, the passing mark (of the 4th grade) this time was 60 out of 100. My score? It was exactly 60!
I just naked the passing mark!!

Is this a mercy from God to me, who were "remorseful" about her( I mean, my) laziness in this year? I made three resolutions at the beginning of 2009, and I just believed I achieved nothing! But, I got one of them! It's a Christmas gift!

However, even I passed a test, I still barely speak & understand French...

"Rash" Hour

Since two months ago, I have kept...them.
When they are quiet, they look like pink dots. When they are active, they are like red amoebas!
"They" are...RASH!

I know the reason.
Two months ago, I underwent a surgery. It was easy one, though, I took antibiotics to prevent infectious disease. Then, I got nettle rash whole my body as an adverse effect!

I went to a local physician, but he seemed having no idea why antibiotics had stayed in my body so long time. He prescribed steroids, but my French teacher opposed that.
She said, "No steroids! Steroids can make your symptoms calm. But after you stopped taking them, your rash becomes worse!!"

She recommended me to a dermatologist in Hiroo.
The dermatologist is a very beautiful woman. I guess she may be in her 50's, but her skin is...very REFINED!!!

She had me take a blood test to figure out what was the reason of the rash.
Today, I got the result!
The reasons were...surprisingly, house dusts and mites!!
The doctor said, "Antibiotic was trigger. But basically, you are allergic constitution.
Once you get rash, your skin are affected by house dusts and mites."
I was puzzled, "So, what should I do? Cleaning my house all the time??"
She smiled gracefully, " You can't root out all of the mites in your house. The place they likely live is futon. Get a nozzle for futon, and vacuum it often."

Oh! I thought I was a drama queen who had an adverse effect from a surgery...
But the problem now is not antibiotics, but house dusts and ticks!
Do I have to clean my house obsessively like Bree in desperate housewives?

I don't want to, but now, just enjoy having RASH HOUR...
Whenever I go to the dermatologist in Hiroo, I go to an Italian restaurant and have a delicious lunch and dessert!

Listening Test

I got the result of TOEIC in November.
My listening score was 495 (full score) and reading was 450.
It was...almost same my best score(950) two years ago.

I was relieved that my score didn't plummet.
I took TOEIC a few times after I went back to Japan, but two of the listening scores were not perfect. I have taken the full "listening" score in a few years. When my score was not perfect, I was very tired or the volume was a little bit low to me.
That's excuse? I know...but it's true!

I think any listening tests' results could be effected by the test-taker's condition and the test-venue's condition. Not only in tests, but also in real communication!
The place's acoustic condition, the speaker's accents, the listener's situation ( being relaxed or not...) The listening would be changed!

Anyway, one of my resolutions in 2009 was "getting a full score (990) of TOEIC."
I know my efforts have been short of getting a full score!
I have to work harder next year...

Catch up!

I have a question...
How do you catch up daily news?

My husband and I have subscribed Nikkei (Japan Economy) newspaper.
We think it is the most reliable paper to check economical news. I take time to read it almost a half hours per day... But I realized.

Shouldn't I check news in English?

So, I applied a free-trial-subscription of Japan Times.
They delivered the newspaper to my house for one week.
That's perfect! I can check Japanese daily news in English...BUT, reading two newspaper everyday really...takes time.

So, I decided to subscribe "Weekly Japan Times." It's issued every Saturday, and has weekly news on pages.
Is it the best way to catch up daily news?
I don't know, I also think about subscribing Newsweek or Time for a year, because if I apply that, I can get the issue at the cheapest price!

...However, the problem is whether I could check every issue or...not. I have many copies of Newsweek and Time...but they are "one year old." American president Obama, still is a senator on those issues!!

Party Masters

Last night was the Toastmasters Christmas Gala night.
We rented an Italian restaurant in Minami Aoyama, welcomed many guests, and had a party. I was asked to be a MC there, but since my physical condition had not been good, another member became the MC.
I was not sure whether I could come or not...but eventually, I was VERY glad to make it!

Whenever I go to the Toastmasters meetings, I'm overwhelmed (in a good meaning) by the members' energy. Most members are well-educated, working " career" mothers, and involved with activities (not only the Toastmasters, but also another NPOs or something.)
Especially, the founder of our Toastmaster club, Meg, who are a Japanese-American (Sansei) business owner, is an especially exquisite person.
She always brings many interesting quests!!

Who did she bring last night? Embassies of the Republic Tajikistan, Managers from a major insurance company, American yoga instructor, American English teacher who appears on NHK, a weather reporter, Presidents of food companies, a fashion designer, and a language education system enterpriser.
If you are interested in mingling with them, come to our party!

I had a GREAT time, but at the same time, I felt how difficult to be a PARTY MASTER like Meg.
My "partner" (It was decided by lottery) was a Canadian marketing manager of a mining company. He looked so arrogant and uneasy to talk!
His field was "iron and titanium." Hey, what do I know about "iron and titanium?"
I could talk to him, "Hi, I LOVE titanium because most high-class watches are made of them!"
...The conversation must have finished twenty seconds!

After I wondered, I talked to him, "So...how was the security in South Africa(because he just said he came back from business trip there)? My friend wants to go there to see the World Cup, but he's worried about the security."
He only shrugged his shoulders, "You know, 50 million people are living there. You won't be killed easily."
"Yeah, sure..." ANYWAY, the conversation between us was over within twenty seconds!!

Of course I talked with him more, but I thought, I could have been more...natural.
I had been to Canada, and I learn French, so we could have talked about these!
Just from his "super-business like" appearance, I just "assumed" I should ask his business matters!

...The way to be a "party master" is still far away...
Maybe the best way is going parties many times.
Or, at the Summer Gala (we have big parties twice a year,) shall I be a MC?
Then, I might not have to have "partner" who are difficult to communicate!

Mother's Joy

What month is it now?
December? December means... the last month of the year, that December?
I HAVEN'T NOTICED!!

The reason why I haven't published the blog for four months are several.
But the biggest one is...my laziness...

The reason why I start to update the blog is...that I have been bothered by some people who try to leave VULGAR comments here!!!
Unless I keep updating the articles, they always try to violate. I realized.

Actually, I HAVE TRIED.
Here is an article which I wrote half in...November!!

Let me talk about parents' observation classes. This week is already the fourth parents' observation week since I became an English teacher. However, the more I experience them, the more I get nervous because...for some parents, observation classes means teachers' evalustion classes. But I had a good one on Monday!

In my three year kid class, there are two adorable kids. A girl, Kaori, has got accustomed to English lessons because she started taking our classes since she was one year old. On the other hand, Masaki started it since this April. He couldn't enter the classroom without his mother, He cried, shouted, and tried to avoid me whenever I approached to him. Basically, my three year old class is supposed to be only teacher and kids. No mothers. However, exceptionally, Masakin's mother had to be with him all the time. I tried everything to entertain him. But whenever his mother tried to get out of classroom, he started to cry!

My head teacher said, "This stuation might last...until June."
June!? The situation hadn't changed even after summer. I almost gave up.

But after the Halloween party, things changed.
At the Halloween party, I stayed longer with him. Probably it became a good memory for him. Also, his mother's presistent challenges (she brought Masaki to my English lessons as possible as she can) came fruitful.

After the Halloween party, he became a different kid!
He pulled my arm, took me to the classroom, spread vocabruary cards, and presented what he previewed!!
He said, "Look! (he pointed each card) Legs! Mouth! (Looking at the "Whiskers" card,) Hmmm...what's this? I forgot..."

Since I started to teach children, I saw sometimes "miracle," that a scene of distinctive kids' improvement. (As I teach adults, I haven't seen it...because they "graduately" improve.)
The day was definitely, the "miracle" happened to Masaki!!!

...A few weeks passed, and I had a parents' observation day.
In the three year old kid class, Masaki did a very good work.
He enjoyed English games, anwered my questions in English with great energy, and cencentrated on listening to what I said.

After the class, I noticed. Masaki's mother was crying!
She said to me,"He has completely changed. I knew he likes you, but I didn't imagine such an improvement. I really appreciate your teaching! Will you teach him next year, as well? I really hope so."
I saw the mother's joy.

That was one of the most wonderful moments in my career.

By the way, can I talk about another mother's joy?

Kaori, my another student in the three year old kid class, is a very blessed child,
She is cute, bright, and smart. Her mother seemed enjoying being her mother.
She had Kaori take entrance exams of several prestagious private kindergardens this fall. (I know, right now it's winter! But when I wrote this article, it was fall!)
Therefore, Kaori had been much busier than me...to got to cram shcool to prepare it.
But she had NEVER skipped my class.

Her mother often told me the next year's schedule of Kaori's English lessons depended on her results of kindergarden's entrace exams.

She passed a kindergarden in her neigherhood, so the mother would sign up for a class by a bilingual teacher (me,) and a class by a native speaker teacher.

However, now she started to wonder.
Eventually, Kaori didn't pass S kindergarde, which her parents want her to enter.
S kindergarden has a 3 year-course and a 2 year-course. She didn't pass the 3 year-course, but she might pass the 2 year course next year. Whether letting her challenge the exam again and go to cram schools as well as this year(in that case, Kaori wouldn't have time to take 2 English classes per week,) or coming our school a lot to learn English what she likes...

Sounds like too much pressure for a three year old girl? Maybe... But I'm jealous of Kaori. Her mother thinks about her future, very much!!

The reason why I'm jealous of Kaori is not only that.
Her mother is very stylish, so she always wears a Burbery's or agnes b's dress...

That's the biggest reason!

Angel and Demon

I've been saying, "some kids are like monsters." Some my kid students still say to me, "ugly pig old woman!" And some of them try to kick or punch me.
I know that...but I also know that some kids are like ANGELS.

Especially, one of my three-year-old kid class students, Mio, is an ANGEL.
Whenever she sees me, she runs to me and hugs me. Among other kids who are hard to understand what I intend to do in English games, she always figures out what I require her, and try to do her best in classes. Even she helps me to put away some props! After classes, she hugs me again saying, " I want to stay with you!"
...Yes, she is THE ANGEL!
I was looking forward to seeing her today, as well as usual Mondays.

When I found her this afternoon, she wears a dress like princess as usual.
She smiled to me as usual, and said, "this is for you." and held out her palm, which seemed to hold something.
"Wow, you are so sweet!"
I was very delighted by her surprise, and reached my palm open under her fist.
Then, she dropped her gift for me, and I felt it was.....
A CAST-OFF SKIN OF A BEETLE!!!
I screamed, "AHHHHHHHHH!!" and threw it away unintentionally!
"I'm sorry MIo, but I HATE INSECTS!!!"

Mio got angry to see my behavior. "That is my treasure! So, I gave it to you!!!"
...In today's class, she had a bad temper unlikely usual...

What made me wondered was not only why kids love cast-off skins of beetles, but also why the more she showed it off to me, the more I was scared of it.
I thought Mio was a complete angel...but I saw her "demon side" today...

Every human being has an "angel side" and a "demon side."
Today, I learned it...

Links

Today, one of my friends, Kunie, came to my English school to have her baby take a trial lesson from me! Her baby is 2 year old. A year ago, when she visited my house, I gave him a demo lesson. Not for him...but for me, to practice teaching;) cause I just started to teach English then!
One year has passed & the boy, Shuto, became cuter & cuter boy. He was very active & smart... I was so glad to have them at my school!

A week ago, I got an e-mail from my former conversation partner, Stephanie, who still lives in Indiana, U.S.A. She said she got engaged! She also wrote, "I know it's been so long since I've written - but I always want to catch you up on what's going on here."

Kunie was basically one of my clients. When I was a wedding emcee, she was a bride. I mean, I conducted her wedding before. I wouldn't have met Kunie if I hadn't been wedding emcee, and I wouldn't have got to know Stephanie unless I didn't go to America. I LOVE the links between friends, and I appreciate having such nice friends...even though I've been reclusive & lazy lately. Love you!

"Yes, my princess!"

Hello, you! How have you been???
I've been just...maybe jaded...no, just frustrated... I haven't changed myself & my life yet as the way I aimed for, that's why! But it's OK. Just keep trying to seize the day, everyday!

By the way, I delivered a speech at the Toastmasters recently.
The title was "yes, my princess!" I talked about my experience, visiting Western Butlers' Cafe in Shibuya. Somewhat I dramatized in the speech. When I went there first time, the one who accampanied me was not Eri, but Miki, who is my lovely friend!
I went there with Eri, my favorite co-worker, too, but not for "spying new English educational place" like the script says, but just for having fun. Also, there are some parts she didn't say. Sorry, Eri!

Let me update the script here. Since it has to be a humorous speech, I "acted" several characters. I separeted colors depends on characters.
Pink; Keiko
Orange; Eri ( our school's assistant manager)
Blue; Butler
Green; My husband

The speech was seven-minute-long, so, the script is quite long as well as my other speech scripts. However, if you have time or are intereste in...now, it's time to the show!

Good evening, fellow toastmasters and guests. Have you ever read this magazine? “How to master English FINALLY!” ( I showed "an an," published by Magazine House) I found a very unique article here. "Western Butlers’ Café!" The article says, “In this café, all waiters are young, handsome, loyal western butlers. They speak only English, so the café is VERY popular to practice English conversation.” I teach English at an English conversation school. I showed this article to our assistant manager, Eri, saying,
“This café could be our biggest rival! Why don’t we go there and spy what’s going on!”

When Eri and I entered the café, I found several so-called “butlers.” As soon as they saw us, they smiled and said, ”welcome, my princess!” in unison! I said, “Eri, are they kidding me? Princess!? My students tell me I look in around my 40’s, and look like Edo Harumi! I know I’m far away from a princess!”

After we had seats, a Japanese owner gave us a flyer. It wasn’t a menu. It was a list of things we shouldn’t do.
“Let’s see… First, please refrain from giving your personal information, such as e-mail address or telephone number to your butler privately. Second, please don’t ask butler’s personal information. Third, don’t take pictures of butlers unless you pay for the service!? Eri, how arrogant they are!? I don’t come here to eat them!”

However, when a butler came to us, my skeptical mood was almost changed.
“Hello, my princess. My name is Mark, from England. I am very honored to serve you today.”
“Keiko sensei, he is soooo handsome!”
“I know, Eri, don’t be so excited! We are here to spy them!”
( To Mark) “Hello, Mark. I’m Keiko, nice to meet you. Can I ask you what made you come here, Japan?”
“I came here to be a butler to serve you, princess Keiko.”
“OK, now I know you are so professional… Let me change the question. What did you do in England?”
“ I was at a university for butlers and trained to serve you, my princess. Here is special rose water for princess Keiko, and princess Eri. Oh, I love your dress, and nails. So beautiful.”
“…Wow! Eri, did you hear that? He said I’m beautiful!”
“Keiko sensei, he said your dress and nails are beautiful, not yourself! Come on! Rose water? Cheezy! Wow, good smell…”
“Eri, let’s order the food! Well, according to the notice… We have to ring the bell whenever we ask something!? Annoying!” (ring, ring, ring)
“Yes, my princess!”
…Not only Mark, but all of young handsome western butlers answered us, smiling. “Hummm…that’s nice. By the way, I need to go to a restroom. Excuse me, Eri!"
Then, Mark came close to me with a graceful move.
“My princess, let me escort you.”
“…Thank you…”

Ten minutes later, the English butler, Mark, came to us with a Russian butler, Francis, who was also especially cute.
“My princess, we have a surprise for you. Please close your eyes. One, two, three… Open your eyes!” (They serve us dishes)
“Wow! You wrote our names by a chocolate pen?? That’s very nice!”
“And, this is also for you, my princess.”(he puts a tiara on me.)
“Perfect! Now I feel I became a REAL princess!”

Remember. Our original intention was spying them. However, we were completely enchanted by their services. The butlers were very entertaining, but not too much. They didn’t interrupt our conversation, but they spoke to us when we had a silence, and always checked our tea and served the tea if the cups had less than half.

After I got home, I told my husband about their services. I said,
“Well, if I pay 4,000 yen to buy an original note with an European key, I can exchange messages with the butlers. Also, they lift me up like I’m a real princess and have a picture taken if I pay…2,000 yen!”
My husband was reading newspaper and said dryly,
“Do you know how decent Japanese call that kind of service? A host club! Come back to the reality, mom! I need tea right now!”

…Then, I realized. Most women are required many roles in this society. As an office worker, a wife, a mother, and a considerate female. In my case, I’m busy with teaching my students, listening to their talking, serving tea for visitors. At home, I have a big child whom people call a husband, and do every household chore even though I am exhausted. Sometimes we need someone who entertains us, and serves tea to be relaxed. I mean, someone who just says, “Yes, my princess!!”

...Did you understand??
Maybe you had no idea for some parts unless you "see" my performance itself.
Sorry for the unkind update! But, let me "update" myself here from now on.
I'd like to write articles often, hopefully.
Let me hear your update, too, buddies!

Genetically Modified Food

Hi, how have you been?
I've had big events in this month, such as welcoming my parents-in-law at my house, taking EIKEN and the French certificate exam, having preparetion classes for the Junior International EIKEN, and parents observation classes for kids(eh, that was scary...)

This following essay was my last assignment for EIKEN, and actually the same topic was asked at the real one. However, I don't know I was successful...
I think I'm on the border, and I feel like rather pessimistic... Let's see, let me publish my essay...

Oh, on the other hand, I was VERY successful on the French test.
I got almost full score! Yeah, on the easiest grade, the fifth. Which means? I still can NOT speak French yet!

TOPIC: POTENTIAL BENEFITS AND / OR DANGERS OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD

Although some people are opposed to genetically modified food from the viewpoint of safety and ethical issue, I think it gives us a lot of advantages. I would like to raise three points to support my view.

First, the genetically modified food can be a great solution for food problems. It has longer shelf life and can be produced in bulk, so we can provide them with the people suffering from hunger. Also, some modified foods are developed for people who have diet restrictions.

Secondly, it is not dangerous for our health, and can be healthier than natural food. Some people believe genetically modified food is not safe because some constituents might remain in our bodies. However, every food digests in our stomachs and bowels. Some modified foods even have much nutrition like high-oleic acid soybeans, or golden rice which contains carotenoid.

Thirdly, it is resistant to pests, so we can harvest it in bulk. It is said the element to kill pests will harm people as well. However, the inner of a pest’s stomach is acid, contrary to human being’s one, which is alkaline. The genetically modified food was improved for the pest’s characteristic, so there is nothing to damage our health.

Genetically modified food is one of the great products from biotechnology, and we should use it to solve our problems.

Tooo Dependent on Technology?

In the modern society, some people are too dependent on technology such as computer. However, by and large, I think we should focus on advantages it provides us.

First of all, working situation has become very efficient because of technology. We can have an international meeting by using TV phone, send visual images by a digital camera. Especially, e-mail made us quite easy to contact each other. Not only these general conveniences, but also specific advancements we have been blessed.

Medical field is one of the remarkable benefits from technology’s progress. Fighting with a terminal disease such as cancer is always our concern. However, I heard, nowadays the patients can figure out whether anticancer drug will suit or not for them as the result of DNA test. I think this is a good example that technology gives us freedom to select the best.

Modern technology has absorbed into our private lives, too. I made many friends from all over the world when I lived in America, and I have kept contact them. We send e-mail each other, meet by Skype, chat on the computer, and broad our network by Social Networking Service. If it were thirty years ago, I don’t think we would still be close friends.

We can’t stop following our dream, “to make our lives better.” We should be careful not to be addicted to the conveniences, but I believe we can
receive the benefit.

Encounter

Sometimes people "happen to" meet something(someone) very special.
Today, when I went to a fancy Italian restaurant with my classmate of French class, I met a talented singer-to-be.
She is a young, cute, and very honest girl.
Her friend is a waiter of that restaurant, so she performed a concert there.
Her name is erica, and I think she will come out the major music industry soon...
Check her out if you are interested in!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jCIw56qUGw
I haven't seen (heard) such a perfect performance for awhile. I was so impressed!

Speaking of encounter...it was first time to hung out with Akemi, my French classmate. She is a working mom with two little kids, but she is so active!
I think she goes out much more than me...
Her life sounds like she is having 48 hours...

OK, I'm giving up! I'm so sleepy now, even though I took a nap today...
Maybe my day has just 18 hours, precisely...

Sales Record

The supporting self study campaign has started.
The teachers take counsels with students, and recommend best study materials to them.

This campaign is held biannually.
I have sold some materials to my students, but I remember it was not easy.
I tried to convince them a few times, and my head teacher helped me to give advice them.

However, today...
When I had a counsel with Yukio, who is 67 years old president of a printing company, said "yes" very soon.
He said, "if you recommend it, I'll take it. How much is it?"
...That was it...

He bought our material before, but he hasn't completed it yet.
Therefore, he was not interested in our "self study" materials.
However, maybe since I tried to establish a good rapport with him, he has listened to me well. I felt very happy not only I "sold" our company's material easily, but also I could feel his trust to me.

...Of course that was not a public sales record, but to me, it was my private sales record!

...By the way, my another private student, Ami, who just graduated a junior college, renewed her contract today. She hasn't shown up for a half year without contacting us. It means she skipped her private classes in vain.
But she came to our school today, renewed the contract as our manager recommended. It cost 600,000 yen, but she paid at once by a credit card.
...A BLACK card!
I knew her father is rich, but what's the hell a 20 year old girl has a BLACK card which can afford to buy a MANSION!!

...That was another sales record for today...

Know-it-all?

One of my private students, Tokijiro, is a 78 year old psychiatrist.
He is a graceful, sophisticated, smart gentleman.

However, his problem is...he wants to know EVERYTHING.
I go over just for a few pages of the textbook in a 50-minute class because of a shower of his questions.
For example;

Keiko: So, while she was having a coffee at the Starbucks...
Toki: Wait a minute. What does "Starbucks" mean?

Keiko: In this exercise, let's act it out..
Toki: Excuse me. Why do you say "act it OUT?" What does "out" mean?

Keiko: The pronunciation difference between "blink" and "brink..."
Toki: Brink? What's the meaning difference between "brink" and "cliff???"

...I always want to say, "What do you need?? You should PRACTICE first before asking so many questions!!!"
But surely, never do I. I know he has never reviewed & previewed. He just enjoys asking questions at my school. (In another words. he enjoys satisfying a thirst for knowledge?)

Today, he asked me as usual.
Toki: "What's the real name of "a.m?" What does it come from??"
Keiko: Well... "after midnight."
Toshi: Wow! Really? So, how about "p.m?"
Keiko: Ah..."pre midnight."
Toshi: I didn't know that!

...After the class, I looked them up.
My dictionary said, "a.m" is the abbreviation of "ante meridium." "P.M." is "post meridian." They are not English, Latin!
It's obvious I lied to my student!
...But I may not correct. He doesn't have to know Latin!!!
Sometimes, a teacher should pretend to be a know-it-all...

How to choose your career

I really don't want to take the EIKEN... I hate writing an essay!!!!

Topc: factors to consider when choosing a career

Although we have to make choices everyday in our lives, choosing a career is one of the most important decisions. I would like to discuss how we should figure out the answers.

Basically, I believe we can choose our careers based on our personal values. Earning a higher salary, fulfilling job satisfaction, keeping regular hours, and getting social status… There is no job that meets every standard, so you have to clear which is the most important to you. In my case, I have valued the following two aspects.

First, earning potentials. I teach English at an English conversation school. I have received many rewarding trainings from the school. I have to study hard to meet their requirements, and I am grateful to do so because that makes my English improved.

Second, job satisfaction. I had worked for the government just after I graduated college. I had a stable salary, but I had never been satisfied with my job because it seemed like anybody could be my replacement. However, since I became a teacher, some students have said to me I am irreplaceable for them. That makes me very happy.

Some people have said, “to work is to live.” I think it is very important to recognize what is a criterion for choosing a career to fulfill the life.

Beauty World Japan

Hi!
Some friends have asked me what has been going on...because I haven't republished my blog for awhile... Nothing happens! I haven't gotten swine flu, so far!

Today, my friend, Masami took me to a VERY fabulous event... The Beauty World Japan in Tokyo Big Site! This event basically for people who are involved in beauty industries such as cosmetics, aesthetics, nail salons, hair salons, etc, etc.
Masami was not, neither am I...
But she has a connection to those people, so she got tickets.

It was just amazing how advanced the beauty industries right now...
We got many free samples & leaflets of new products. I can enjoy trying those for awhile!

Thank you, Masami!!

Nuclear Power??

God, I am so unfamiliar with this topic...
My essay may be miserable this time...

Agree or disagree; The use of nuclear power should be expanded?

I agree with the use of nuclear power should be expanded because if I compare it to other power, using nuclear power will bring benefits to Japan.

First, using the nuclear power is economical. The unit price per power generation is much cheaper than price of oil and electricity. Additionally, because of the extremely small weight and volume, it is easier to transport and stock. The cost-effective nuclear power plants will be expected to generate employments, too.

Second, nuclear power doesn’t emit CO2 which is one of the major reasons for the global warming. It doesn’t exhaust Nox and Sox, that are to cause air pollution. In the nowaday’s world, to pick the environmental-friendly one is meaningful.

Thirdly, we can use the renewable energy effectively. We have high technique of retreating nuclear power. On the contrary to our short resources, using the nuclear power & reusing it is one of our ways to survive in the competitive world. We can appeal our high technique level to the world.

I know we have a special feeling for the nuclear war because Japan has been only atomic bomb victim, However, using nuclear power for safety has too many advantages to avoid it.

Crisis of aging society-final draft

Here is the final draft of my "crisis of aging society" essay. I submitted drafts three times, and the teacher proofread them. This is the final one!

Will societies with aging populations face a crisis in the future?

Yes, I think Japan is going to face a crisis because of the increasing size of aging population. I would like to raise three issues as follows.

First, declining birth rate will accelerate Japan to be an unbalanced aging society. To encourage increasing the birth rate, the government should implement various policies. Lowering educational expenses, encouraging official support for working mothers, and promoting governmental support for couples with fertility problems, will greatly contribute to improve the situation.

Secondly, the fund for social welfare expense will be depleted in an aging society. To get the resource, I think the most effective way is raising the rate of consumption tax. Since all people need social security, it is inevitable to pay more tax when we buy something, in particular luxurious items. It is also a good way to change the tax in the manner that the rate depends on the kind of expense.

Thirdly, high medical expenses will be a heavy burden for many senior citizens. However, I think if we reduce medical costs, we can’t keep the high qualities of the Japanese medical services. In spite of having the world’s longest life expectancy, the Japanese medical cost for senior citizens has been sky-high, compared to other developed countries. Promoting the awareness of health care would make haste slowly about this problem.

The crisis of increasing aging population is predictable. To avoid this, we should take action as soon as possible.

Circle

I had been looking forward to having today.
May 8, 2009... It is the day I can meet Sally, my former tutor & my perfect role model!

Her youngest son is married to a Japanese woman. He lives in Yokohama, so Sally and her husband visit Japan every other year. Every other year? I think she visits Japan often more... Anyway, I admire her! It takes 14 hours by air plane from Chicago to Japan!

Me, and other Sally's former students went to Yokohama to have lunch with Sally.
Amazingly, Sally brought her husband, son, and daughter-in-law.
Yes, amazingly to us...but maybe it's natural for them because whenever I met Sally, it was common that her family members joined us.

We made a circle surrounding Sally. We had a great time, talking and tasting delicious food...
I felt VERY thankful to her. It's wonderful I can meet my role model even she lives in America! Right? While I was enjoying talking, I just supposed the friendship is like "a circle." Rounding and rounding...we meet sometimes, not often, but we know we can "see you" again. It never stopped as long as we respect each other.

...When we did farewell, Sally smiled to us.
"Please come to America! It takes "just" 14 hours!"
...I pay a great esteem for her...

Birthday Craze

Since today, I've been back to my regular life!
I went to work, attended a business meeting, and taught my classes...

When I get to work, I am so busy as if I were at the battle ground. However, today, especially I was hectic! All of us had been gone because of the Golden Week...then Toshi (our head teacher) noticed we had forgotten about Bob's birthday. It was May 5th!

We always celebrate staff's birthday at my school, so we shouldn't have forgotten!
I came forward to be a volunteer, and dashed to a department store to buy a birthday card & pudding (which Bob loves) cake.

After all of our students left, we celebrated his birthday. It was successful!
But because of the preparation of the birthday surprise & unexpected quests, I didn't have enough time to do things around.

I got home at 11:30 pm. Exhausted, but.... that's the REALITY!
I realized my "reality" is not in Maui...

Mahalo! Maui☆

Sometimes I bring various places I've traveled before to my mind. Yes, I am lucky that I've been to many countries in the world. Traveling is always to become precious memories. However, this time..."the travel to Maui" was so special.

I came back to Japan yesterday from there. I haven't put pictures on my blog for awhile... But today, I'm very excited to do that !

Why Maui is so special? I think it's because there is great nature, in the small island in Hawaii. It is surrounded by amazingly beautiful sea. But if you look the other side, you would take your breath to see the glorious mountains. Uh, I should explain the pictures!

The first three pictures are from our( I mean, of course my hubby and I!) room at the hotel we stayed. The first one is afternoon, the second one is sunrise time, and the third is sunset time. We stayed at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa http://www.westinmaui.comps=ps_aa_ssp_hawaii_
the_westin_maui_pop_/060107_nad_fm/

I'm afraid the left picture is not bright enough...but in the hotel, even a part of the lobby was "great nature." There was (a kind of ) lake, and...can you see flamingos over the lake? There are some interestingly beautiful birds, too.

The blue bird on the right picture was the one I found in the parking of the Wilea shopping mall. But the red one & yellow birds lived actually in the lake in Westin Maui!

I also like the Hawaii's relaxed atmosphere. In Maui, even airport's lavatory's sign girl has a lei!

Surely we got many chances to see the "real" fula dance shows. Almost every night, fula dance shows (like the right picture) were being held while we were staying... At the shopping mall, restaurants, etc, etc.

Oh, the left picture was dolls I found at a souvenir shop. I was impressed that even Santa Claus (and his wife?) wore Aloha shirts in Hawaii!!

Mostly we were just chilling out on the beach in Maui. I can show you our favorite beach... Here is Oneloa Beach!

In the picture, the sea looks calm? But actually, the wave was so high in the beach! There were many merry surfers there. We could see them be taken away by the wave!!
(Of course they came back! They were enjoying!!)

We enjoyed characteristic scenery at the Maui Tropical Plantation (the left picture) even though it was unexpectedly secluded place.

However, the most mind-blowing scenery was...from the top of the Haleakala National Park. Can you figure it out? We could drive to the top of the volcano, so we were completely "above the cloud." Mt.Fuji's altitude is 3,776m. The Haleakala's one is about 3,000m. Mt. Fuji is higher, but at the Haleakala, we can get the top wearing flip flops!!

We saw the craters. Exactly there, some SF movies' shootings were held... Even we swam at the beach with hot weather the day before, we could be blown by the strong wind at the top of high volcano!

Golfing is another attractive activity in Maui. I haven't played golf since I came back to Japan, but I felt so happy to play it in Maui!

I hope you can see a white flag in the right picture... The course we played was Kapalua Golf Club, Plantation Course. http://www.golflink.com/golf-courses/course.aspx?course=265145

The course is known for a prestigious PG course with spectacular scenery. It has unique up-down hills and be surrounded by beautiful sea...

Also, the plantation course is famous for the difficulties for players. The right picture was the notorious? 7th hole. I took the picture at the ladies' tee place. The dark forest in front of the grass was actually, the deep valley. To get to the green, I had to hit the ball over 150 yards. Did I make it? Of course not! My longest distance by a driver is 100 yards.
But my hubby did make it!
I just wrote my memories at the Golden week Maui trip. I hope you enjoyed pictures!
I was back to my regular life. My blog will be back to be a "boring" blog, too...
Forgive me!& if you live in Japan, enjoy your rest of holidays☆

Golden Week

If you live in Japan... How do you spend at the Golden Week?
I'm going to Maui (in Hawaii) tomorrow!
See you (almost) a week later!!

On-line class

Since yesterday, the on-line EIKEN class has started.
The student is...only me. The instructor is an experienced teacher who has passed the first grade of EIKEN for 27 times in a row!! ( He has been taking it for ten years continuously...)

He has been teaching at a vocational school for interpreters-to-bes.
If I take his course, it costs 180,000 yen... But he also has opened for short-term classes like listening, interview, etc. I've been his classes twice. He opened the reading section seminar as well, but I was the only one who applied for it.

Therefore, we opened the class on-line. We talked by Skype. I had a problem to use it, but now it is working successfully! Also, I got a bargain! Lucky me☆
I took his reading class & essay correction correspondence. He charged me only 300 bucks! (I paid it as yen, though☆)

He is a "professor" type teacher, compared to myself, as a "friend" or "entertainer type..." Sometimes I think he talked too much & should ask my reaction more...
But I've been definitely learning about how to pass an English test from him.
Hopefully I could pass it the next time!

Got a raise!

It has been almost one years since I started to work at the English school.
I renewed my contract as a part time teacher, and I found...I got a raise!
I didn't negotiate about it, but I did☆
Maybe it's a normal thing for employees??? I don't know...
My raise was "just a little bit," but I was glad!

Having the floor

It became a memorable day, today.
I just made a speech at the Toastmasters after in interval of (almost) one year and a half!
The speech was for the humorous speech manual #2.

How did I feel after I had the floor? I can't wait to give another speech!
It always takes time to prepare a speech. However, the fulfillment is also, always huge. I'd like to make more speeches & have experience a lot!

...But before preparing for another speech, I need to prepare for the EIKEN...

Crisis of aging society

...I want to write about silly stories among my kid students and me, but maybe I should work on this topic. I started to take a castigation class of English essays...this is the first assignment.

Will societies with aging populations face a crisis in the future?

Because of the increasing ratio of aging population, I think Japan is going to confront difficult matters. I would like to raise three issues as follows.

First, we should boost the number of birth rate. The reasons of not having a child are various. The educational expenses should be lower, working mothers need supports from employers and communities, and couples who want to have sterility treatment should be able to take it more comfortably with governmental support.

Secondly, the necessity of getting financial resource of social security expense will be more serious. In my opinion, the most possible resource is consumption tax. I think it is acceptable to raise consumption rate to compensate the social security expense because those money are for all people. To provide security especially for aging people, we need to get the financial resource promptly.

On the other hand, thirdly, senior citizens have to care about their health more. I heard the Japanese medical expense for senior citizens is much higher than other countries even though Japan has the longest life expectancy. Having the sense of health management will be indispensable in an aging society, like Japan.

The crisis about increasing aging population is predictable. To avoid this, we should take actions as soon as possible.
